Canada Day tunage

Posted by: Phil   in Canada, Music you need

In honour of Canada Day, here’s a selection of great Canadian music for you.

First up, Toronto’s Holy Fuck, who buck the system (fuck the system?) by giving themselves a name that can’t be pronounced on the radio, thus forcing radio & tv stations to either bleep their name every time they play them, or simply not play them at all.

Lovely Allen

Also check out Tone Bank Jungle.

Next, from Newmarket, Ontario – Tokyo Police Club.  Tokyo Police Club describes their sound as “wide-eyed post-punk with a tendency to get over excited-so much so that someone has to come and tell it to settle down.”

Juno (which is about the city in Alaska, and not about the movie)

Also check out Tessellate and Nature of the Experiment.

The Fembots are from Toronto, consisting of two former members of defunct bands Dig Circus and Hummer.

Count Down Our Days

The New Pornographers are pretty much ubiquitous, being almost everywhere.  They, along with groups like Broken Social Scene and Arcade Fire are pretty much everywhere.

Here they are covering Toronto’s “Your Daddy Don’t Know”.

What would Canada Day be without a little Canadian Celt Rock?

Enter the Hagis – Gasoline

And a classic:
Ashley MacIsaac – Sleepy Maggie
