…Podcast?
What is this Podcast thing?
Wikipedia describes a podcast like this:
Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio or video programs, over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The term (a portmanteau), was coined in 2004 combining “iPod”, a popular portable audio device, and “broadcasting.”
The term podcast, like ‘radio’, can mean both the content and the method of delivery. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. Though podcasters’ web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading feeds like RSS or Atom.
Usually a podcast features one type of ’show’, with new episodes released either sporadically or at planned intervals such as daily or weekly. In addition, there are podcast networks that feature multiple shows on the same feed.
But what does that mean, exactly?
Think of a “Podcast” as a radio show. Except instead of listening to it on the radio, its an mp3 file that you download to your computer. You can play it on your computer in a media player like Winamp, Windows Media Player, iTunes, or Real Media
You can also load the Podcast into your iPod or mp3 player. In fact there are programs that will do that for you. Programs like iTunes (mentioned above) have the ability to help you search for Podcasts and to download them, play or put them on your ipod. There are other programs (called “podcatchers”), which help you subscribe to a podcast. Some examples are Juice, FireAnt, or Winpodder.
Unlike a radio show, you use a program like iTunes or Juice to subscribe to a podcast. When the podcast is updated (a new show is put online), your “podcatcher” will update and the new episode will be downloaded to your computer, so you can listen or load it onto your portable player.
Does that make sense? If not, and you have a question, don’t hesitate to ask me.
